Keep Cool with These Hot-Weather Moving Tips

Nobody wants to move in the heat of the summer, but sometimes, it can’t be avoided. Many people find themselves sweating their summer move, from kids being out of school and summer newlyweds moving into their first home to recent college graduates striking off on their own. While you can’t make it cooler, you can make things easier on yourself, and anyone helping you move, with these hot tips.

Stay hydrated.

It may sound like a no-brainer, but people often get caught up in moving and forget to hydrate, making them susceptible to dehydration and heat exhaustion. Make sure you have plenty of cold water available for everyone, and try to alternate water with a drink containing electrolytes to replenish those you lose when sweating.

Bon appétit!

People often lose their appetite when they’re too hot or doing a lot of strenuous physical activity. Eating is integral to replacing more of those lost electrolytes and fueling your body while you burn calories. Just be careful not to eat anything too rich or heavy that will weigh you down. Eat a salty snack when you hydrate to keep your energy level up.

Be an early bird or a night owl.

The safest time to be outdoors in the summer heat is very early in the morning or late at night. It’s not as convenient to move when it’s darker out, but the peak hours of the day (typically between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.) are the hottest. If you have a long way to drive, try to arrange it so those hours are spent in the car or truck.

Dress for success.

Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes that are loose-fitting—darker colors attract more heat. Don’t forget the sunscreen! If possible, wear moisture-wicking clothes for even greater comfort. As much as you may want to wear flip flops or sandals, resist the urge and wear comfortable, sturdy sneakers to avoid injury. You should also pack a bag with extra clothes, a towel, and some toiletries so you’re prepared if you need a cool-down shower while moving.

Keep sensitive belongings cool.

Anything that may be damaged by heat or prolonged sun exposure, like TVs, laptops, or artwork, should be packed last so they can be unpacked first.
